August House//Cape Town Collab: a cultural exchange

Conceived of by Carlyn Strydom, Sara Hallet & Vivien Kohler

As part of the META Foundation’s current commitment to the artists housed at August House in Johannesburg, their aim is to find various avenues of exposure for these artists. August House currently accommodates more than 50 artists. Because it would be impossible to fit all the artists into one exhibition or even an added secondary exhibition, the idea was born to have multiple exhibitions running concurrently in Cape Town’s City Centre.

A select few art spaces were identified for this purpose: AVA Gallery, Nel Gallery, WORLDART, Eclectica Contemporary and Alliance Francaise du Cap. Different types of art spaces were approached, some commercial and others non-profits to give a fuller picture of the art landscape in South Africa, which functions on multiple levels with players invested in the arts in their unique ways.

Beyond just showcasing the talents coming out of August House, we’re exploring ‘collaboration as an art’; collaboration between cities, different art spaces, artists, and curators. This project explores the necessity of collaboration towards a thriving art scene.

Each space worked with artists who matched their curatorial sensibilities. This includes 12 August House artists in 5 Cape Town galleries across the city centre.

Exhibitions run through July & August 2021 at participating venues.
